Photovoltaic vs. Solar Thermal Collector¶
This section compares the performance of Photovoltaic (PV) panels and Solar Thermal Collectors (STC) under equal-area conditions. The analysis evaluates both the Energy Yield and the Exergy Yield to provide a comprehensive thermodynamic assessment.
Energy and Exergy Analysis¶
While the energy efficiency of an STC is typically higher than that of a PV panel, exergy analysis reveals a different perspective. Exergy accounts for the quality of energy. Electrical energy from PV panels represents pure exergy (quality factor $approx 1$), whereas the low-grade thermal energy produced by STCs has a lower exergy value.
Comparison of Energy Yield and Exergy Yield between PV panels and Solar Thermal Collectors under equal area constraints.¶
The results illustrate the ‘thermodynamic irrationality’ in certain scenarios where solely focusing on energy yield might lead to suboptimal utilization of available solar exergy.
